FAQs

  • What does my day pass get me?

A day pass to Marian’s Marsh provides you with parking and access to 20 acres of private wetlands along the Toussaint River.  Marian’s Marsh is not open to the general public and reservations are required.  Marian’s Marsh provides birding conditions similar to those along the Magee Marsh Boardwalk but without the crowds.  Don’t just see the warblers, experience the warblers!  You have the time, equipment, and desire, what you need is the location.

  • Is Marian’s Marsh a guided tour?

No. Marian’s Marsh provides access to private land that allows birders to proceed at their own pace and comfort level. Don’t just see the warblers, experience the warblers!  You have the time, equipment, and desire, what you need is the location.

  • Can I bring my tripod?

Yes!  Marian’s Marsh provides access to a limited number of guests each day.  We provide the serious birder and photographer the opportunity to view and photograph warblers and other birds without the crowds found at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and other local birding hotspots.

  •  Can I bring a chair or stool?

Yes!  Guests are allowed to bring a chair, stool, or whatever will make their birding experience more comfortable.  Bear in mind that you must carry in and carry out whatever equipment you choose to bring. Guests who seat themselves along the trail are asked to leave room for others to comfortably pass by.

  • How long is the hike?

The John Henry Trail is an out-and-back hike that is just short of 2 miles round trip.   The trail is located mostly along the top of a maintained dike.  However, some low areas of the trail or side trails may be muddy and best traversed with hiking boots or waterproof footwear.

  • Are restrooms available?

Yes. A porta-potty will be located in the parking area as well as one along the trail.

  • Will farming take place during my visit?

Possibly. Marian’s Marsh is part of a working farm owned by the Henry family.  While most planting and other early season work is typically completed before May, farm operations may take place during your visit.  The John Henry Trail does not pass through any active farm fields but does border a field for the first ¼ mile.

  • Can I bring my dog?

No. While the Henrys have their own furry friends, dogs are not allowed at Marian’s Marsh during the bird-watching season in order to limit distractions to birds and guests alike.

  • Is there a discount for children?

No. Because Marian’s Marsh limits the number of birders on the property at all times, all visitors are required to pay the full access fee.

  • Do you offer group discounts?

Yes!  We offer discounts for groups of 8 or more people.  Please contact us to discuss a group discount.

  • Do you allow birdcall playback to attract birds?

We ask that guests do not use birdcall playback from phones or other devices to attract birds.  We all love ebird and Merlin for convenient and powerful tools they provide for bird identification and tracking.  But we ask that guests abide by the ABA Code of Birding Ethics and refrain playback to attract birds.
